Workplace diversity covers gender equality, heterogeneous background, racial and other demographic mixes help nurture business in a very powerful and systemaic way. It does fetch different views, perspectives, ideologies and abilities to handle situations differently. It also brings in freshness, novelty and provides holistic solutions to the problem. These diverse views on "design, develop and market the solutions" draw greater results for business and helps to keep the comfort of status-quo at bay. On the other hand, it is essential to place business needs first, before putting diversity equation, eg. Gold mine in Uzbekistan needs skilled labour than gender diversity.
- Australia is no. 1 in workplace diversity
- India is barely making to the list – Afghanistan is just behind us
- Banks with women leaders have lesser chances of going bankrupt
Hiring people from diverse background should strictly be based on competency and merits of an individual. When I tried gathering information on basic needs of workplace diversity, few ideas came out such as, getting basic infrastructure in place to suit the diversity needs, putting diversity management programs in place, creating committed teams and empower them. Businesses are expected to fine-tune their diversity initiatives and it should reflect on continuous commitment demonstration at all stakeholder engagement activities, such as induction programmes, townhalls, meets, promotion debriefings, off-sites etc.
At the end measurements like diversity ratios, competitive advantage objectives etc. must be analysed. Are we doing enough on workplace diversity? Happy to know your views.
